The Northwest Gardeners' Resource Directory: Western Oregon, Washington & Visitors' British Columbia (8th Edition)
Published in Paperback by Cedarcroft Press (April, 1999)
Authors: Stephanie Feeney and Daniel J. Hinkley
Average review score:

A fantastic resource
As an information junkie, I'm always turning to the Internet for fast and up-to-date information for my garden design business. This book has replaced my computer for first-glance information. Debra provides significant editorial value in this reference, which I find dog-eared and well-used in a few short weeks. A must-have for any gardener in the Northwest, and a brilliant gift for a gardener new to the area.

A must have for northwest gardeners
It's a Northwest garden enthusiast's dream come true! Stephanie Feeney has outdone herself and compiled information in this edition I will refer to again and again. The list of nurserys to visit is complete with directions, business hours, the types of plants they sell and what they specialize in, e-mail addresses, and any other helpful information that may be of interest. I especially appreciate the geographic locator in the very back that breaks down locations by region that makes planning a garden outing a breeze. I even found a few nurseries in my small town that I didn't know existed. Other chapters include organizations that help gardeners, clubs, foundations, societies and volunteer opportunities, education, gardening with children and young people, internet gardening, publications, professional services, gardens to visit, shows and exhibits, and the list goes on. And it's all written in a friendly personal manner.

Now Comes Theodora
Published in Paperback by iUniverse Publishing Services (01 May, 2000)
Author: Daniel Ford
Average review score:

A stellar book about 1960s campus rebels
Published about the time of the first Woodstock 'happening,' this novel deals with anti-war protesters on a New England college campus. Well worth the read, for anyone who was there at the time. Wonder how the Vietnam protests came to be? Young (and middle-aged) people in Ford's story will show that it was all in motion at the beginning of the 1960s.

Very good story about students in the 1960s
I always like to see where a writer is coming from. Dan Ford writes military history now, but he started out as a novelist, and this was his first published book. He's writing about the era just before Viet Nam, when JFK was in the White House and Bill Clinton was in high school. Instead of the draft, his students are scared of The Bomb, and they'd rather march for peace and try out for extracurricular sex than hit the books. The 1960s began long before the love-in at Woodstock!

This is a really fine first novel. The writing is snappy, the characters are real, and their worries are timeless. Read it! - Paddy

Now You're Cooking for Company: Everything a Beginner Needs to Know to Have People over
Published in Hardcover by Harlow & Ratner (01 October, 1996)
Authors: Elaine Corn and Daniel McClain
Average review score:

Great cook book for beginners and semi-beginners!
I love this book. I also own the original Now You're Cooking. Elaine Corn gives great instructions, tips and the recipes are wonderful. I have used her books countless times when having company. I especially like the fact that she tells you the order of preparation and how to time everything. These books are great for college grads or brides. And the Chocolate chip cookie recipe in the Now You're Cooking book is the BEST.

Elaine Corn is a lifesaver!
I love this book! I have 'Now You're Cooking' as well and they are the two most used books in my collection. The recipes are for good, simple, full flavor meals. If you weren't raised in the chicken it can be daunting learning to cook, especially if you don't want to live off of boxed/canned foods. If you know someone moving out on their own, off to college, whatever, get this for them. It is fantastic!

Obstetrics and Gynecology Recall
Published in Paperback by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (15 January, 1997)
Authors: F. John Bourgeois, Paola A. Mullin, and Daniel S. Veljovich
Average review score:

Another Gem in the Recal Series
Second only to Surgical Recall in the series, this was an invaluable tool for preparation, particularly on the mornings or evenings prior to GYN surgery. Use it to review the pertinent anatomy and physiology prior to attendance in the OR and you will be rewarded by escaping that uncomfortable silence that ensues when you don't have a clue to those inevitable pimps.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Recall
This was an excellent review for your OB/GYN rotation. It presented a concise review and excellent preparation for questions on rounds and in the OR. Covered more than enough for your OB/GYN rotation and can be very useful in an internship.

O Gosh
Ok, I just wanted to say that "count down" is my fav books series, and I specially loved this month's book! Sarah's dead? Jezebel too? What's gonna happen now?? WHAT? I can't wait to read november! U ?

Only two months left until the end of the world.
There are only two months left until what is left of the world ends and the demon Lilith triumphs. Only one girl can stop the ticking clock.... Sarah, an ordinary teenager who just happens to be the Chosen One. In order to stop the countdown, she must kill Jezebel, the demon in human form. And Julia, another teenager, must survive - because she knows, somehow, that the baby she is pregnant with somehow fits into the picture. Although the only key to this is the visions she and the baby's father, George, are having. Meanwhile, George searches the wilderness for Julia, and Sarah, with the help of her friend Ariel, makes a plan to kill Jezebel before it's too late.... I highly reccomend reading the entire Countdown series.

On Moral Grounds: The Art/Science of Ethics
Published in Paperback by Crossroad/Herder & Herder (April, 1996)
Authors: Daniel C. Maguire, A. Nicholas Fargnoli, and Fargnoli A. Nicholas
Average review score:

Matthew Weiler's Review of OMG
This book is an excellent and provocative insight into the practice of ethics. The sagacity it provides is probably indispensible. It is illustrative of the reality that everything we do is morally grounded, and further that morality can NEVER be a polarized issue. Morality and ethics is dependant on the circumstances, and this does not insinuate relativism at all. If one is to read this book, they will have no doubt that the time spent was anything but well worth it.

OMG is a great approach to a method of "doing" ethics.
On Moral Grounds is an update of Maguire's earlier work The Moral Choice. The newer work with the insights of Fargnoli offers the reader a terrific approach to a method of Ethics. The Foundational Moral Experience (FME) is offered as a universal starting point for all to begin the art/science of ethics. The structure of the "wheel and hub" allows one to visualize the essential aspects for a mature ethical decision making. I have used this book on the graduate, undergraduate, as well as advanced high school programs. It can be easily adapted to communities of faith as well as agnostic and atheistic communities. It is well written and an enjoyable read for all interested in the arena of morality.

One Man Tango
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (September, 1995)
Authors: Anthony Quinn and Daniel Paisner
Average review score:

An Extraordinary Life !
I know I can't do this book justice, but with only one other review, I'll take my best shot.

I have read several celebrity autobiographies, but this one is by far the best. What a life! His father was half Irish and half Mexican. His mother was illegitimate and half Mexican and half Indian. He was conceived while "both" of his parents were fighting with Pancho Villa. He lived in a dirt-floor shed. His father became a migrant farm worker in the U.S. and later got a job at a studio. Quinn's father's arm was nearly torn off by a panther that Quinn had befriended. These are only some of the highlights in just the first 39 pages.

Quinn was originally planning on becoming an architect, but Frank Lloyd Wright sets into motion a serendipitous chain of circumstances, which leads to Quinn becoming an actor instead of an architect.

This book is much more than the story of Quinn, or even the film industry. Through out his life, Quinn seemed to come into contact, or into bed, with everyone that was anyone: anywhere. While still an unknown-unknown, he was in the frequent company and advice of such people as John Barrymore, Error Flynn, W. C. Fields, John Steinbeck, William Saroyan, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and William Faulkner. During this time, he married Cecil B. De Mille's adopted daughter, which resulted in a 20-year-conflict between Quinn and De Mille. Having De Mille as a father-in-law actually harmed Quinn's career.

Quinn tells of a clandestine meeting with Howard Hughes at 2:30 AM on Mulholland Drive and Hughes arrives with 3 cars. Quinn discusses his 3-year-old son drowning in W. C. Fields' swimming pool. Time and space cause me to only try to wet your appetite.

After reading this book, it's hard to tell if Quinn was playing Zorba, or if Zorba was playing Quinn. By the way, even the dance Quinn does at the end of this movie is a very interesting story.

As with all great books, it unfortunately didn't last long enough.

One Man Tango
I really enjoyed this book by Anthony Quinn. At first, I was put off by the way his thoughts jumped around, but in retrospect, I realize that this was just his way of getting his point across, and I became mesmerized by his thoughts and the disparity of his early years. Mr. Quinn did not flower his book with how great he was, or even sound like a celebrity, in the description of his life. In his early years he was very poor, and really let the reader feel his thoughts on his poverty, and how he fought to stay alive. It is a great example of coming from a life of nothing, with seldom having food to eat, to become a great actor, artist, lover, and family man.

Although he would never receive accolades as a husband, he truly loved his family. He mentioned several times, his grief at the death of his son and the loss of father.

He made many friends along the way, and treasured every one. Not caring whether they were paupers or kings.

In 1983, we had the pleasure of seeing and meeting Mr. Quinn on Broadway, in Zorba the Greek. We had invested in several of his paintings and sculptures, and was invited to a party for him at the Helmsley Palace in New York City. We were really impressed with his ability to encompass a room with his presence, while giving every person a piece of his persona.

This book is excellent reading, which keeps the reader waiting for his next thought. The world will truly miss this great man.

Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (October, 1994)
Authors: David A. Kolb, Irwin M. Rubin, Joyce S. Osland, and Daniel Kolb
Average review score:

An Experiential Approach describes this OB book well.
Osland, Kolb, and Rubin continue to make a fine book better. The buyer is well advised to think about the title before making a purchase. Organizational Behavior: an Experiential Approach makes clear that much of the text will be devoted to things like "Learning Style Inventories," "Thematic Apperception Tests," "Past Experience Inventories", "Active Listening Exercises," Case Studies, Role Plays, and the like. Many of these exercises may be easily completed and scored by the reader. Some, like the Thematic Apperception Test, are difficult for the reader to score accurately, but not impossible. Many of the exercises, such as active listening, require a partner, and some simulations require a larger group to complete the work.

The introductory text to the experiential exercises at the end of each chapter is well written and instructive. In a few words the authors make valuable points about perception, motivation, leadership, decision-making and problem solving, group work, and team development. They have in mind the professional manager who has on-the-job experience; a younger reader might find it difficult to relate to the tone and style of the book, which is aimed at a literate, educated, intelligent audience.

College professors, many of whom are a finicky lot, have adopted this book for their organizational behavior courses for over twenty years. That they continue to select this text is testimony to its enduring appeal and value.

For those readers who want a more conventional approach to the subject of organizational behavior, Stephen Robbins has written a variety of OB books that are comprehensive, readable, and even entertaining. Robbins covers more ground than Osland, but has less room for personal application of the material.

The reader who wants to learn from concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experiementation will find Organizational Behavior: an Experiential Approach an excellent resource for further study and application.

An Excellent Book!
An Excellent Book.. A Must For All The Managers In Any Organistaion.

Excellent American History Resource
History textbooks are usually inadequate and painfully boring. This book is exceptionally well-written, accurate and interesting. It's great!

This book is awesome.
I am a secondary education history major and I use this book in my US history class. I find it to be simply outstanding. It reads like a novel and not like a text book. This is a must have for any history buff.
